Google to buy Nest Labs for $3.2bn

Google has announced plans to buy thermostat maker Nest Labs for $3.2bn (£2bn), continuing a string of recent acquisitions. Google said the cash deal was expected to be completed in the next few months. California-based Nest Labs was founded by two former Apple executives. It produces a thermostat capable of learning user behaviour and working out whether a building is occupied or not, using temperature, humidity, activity and light sensors. EMEA Server Revenues Down Again in 3Q13 But Signs of Revival in Southern Europe and on Blade Side, Says IDC

FRANKFURT and PRAGUE, December 11, 2013 — According to the latest EMEA Server Tracker from International Data Corporation (IDC), factory revenue in the EMEA server market reached $2.8 billion in the third quarter of 2013 (3Q13), a decrease of 3.0% when compared with the same quarter of 2012. Shipments reached 535,767 units, representing a 4.9% annual decline. NatWest online services hit by cyber attack

A deliberate attempt to disrupt services at NatWest left some customers struggling to access online banking on Friday. The surge of traffic – known as a distributed denial of service attack – was blamed by the RBS Group, which owns NatWest, for the access problems. The disruption lasted for an hour from 11:30 GMT.
